“About 380 known chemicals have been described in cocoa, and among them are phenolic plant compounds, which have been extensively studied for their antioxidant properties,” nutritionist Laura Parada tells Vogue. “Moreover, in some studies, it has been observed that raw cocoa contains much higher levels of total phenolics and has higher antioxidant activity than black and green tea.” It helps lower cholesterol: “Numerous studies confirm that cocoa consumption can benefit heart health by lowering blood pressure, increasing blood vessel elasticity, and slightly reducing LDL cholesterol, which may help fight diabetes by reducing insulin resistance and other inflammatory processes,” says Parada.
