Smith won two Oscars during her illustrious career—for 1970's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and 1979's California Suite—along with four more Academy Award nominations, not to mention five BAFTAs. Before she was sweeping awards season, however, Smith was a fairy-tale British talent who made her name on the West End stage. The Essex-born actress began her career as Viola in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at the Oxford Playhouse, where she learned her craft. It was the beginning of a love affair with the Bard that would last for decades: she played Desdemona in Othello (and earned her first Oscar nomination for her performance in the 1965 film adaptation) and played Queen Elizabeth, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra on stage in the late '70s.

As we've come to expect from the streaming giant, the supporting cast is fantastic—Poor Things' Christopher Abbott as Adam, Challengers' Mike Faist as Charles, Hoon Lee as the Trask family's Chinese-American servant Lee, along with Pugh's Cathy—as is the behind-the-scenes team. Zoe Kazan—best known for her work on The Big Sick, The Plot Against America, and She Said, who co-wrote the Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Wildlife with her partner Paul Dano, and who is also Elia Kazan's niece—is leading the adaptation and will serve as showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart. Meanwhile, Lion's Garth Davis and Lady Chatterley's Lover's Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre will share directing duties, and Pugh has signed on as an executive producer.
