TikTok popularized it, of course—but, like most trends launched by Discover (girls dinners, a googolplex of -cores), fridgescaping actually predates Nyquil chicken. Conventional wisdom (or at least Architectural Digest) holds that interior designer Kathy Sue Perdue first deployed the term on her Blogspot in the catchy Verdana font in 2011. (Kathy Sue, like Didion, was a Brentwood resident, but one imagines the similarities end there.) Purdue’s efforts at fridgescaping, however, are much more closely tied to “basic kitchen organization” (putting everything…into containers) than they are to the equivalent of a sand Mandala made of deli meat. By that standard, Martha Stewart was extolling the virtues of fridgescaping before she’d even seen the inside of Alderson Federal Penitentiary.

Despite being together for more than a decade, Manisha and Chris said their wedding felt like a new beginning. “It felt like we were opening a new chapter in the book of life. I was so excited,” Manisha said. When Hawaiian Joan Didion introduced herself to Life readers with the immortal line about being “in the middle of the Pacific instead of filing for divorce,” she added a caveat. “I tell you this not as a meaningless revelation but because I want you to know, in the time I’m writing for this page, exactly who I am, where I am, and what I’m thinking… You’re going to have a woman who, for a while, has felt completely divorced from most of the ideas that other people seem to care about. You’re going to have a woman who somewhere along the way has lost what little faith she once had in the social contract, in the principle of improvement, in the whole grand scheme of human endeavor.”
