But she doesn’t want to push herself too far. She still has two big releases coming this fall, and the very real possibility of a double Oscar nomination next year. Ronan lives a fairly private life with Lowden in London, so when she decides to commit to something, she likes to go all in. “Both of these movies—especially The Outrun—came from very deep parts of me,” she says. “I like being that person instead of just theorizing things, and it’s a liberating experience.”
The pair are keen to produce together again, but they need to have some personal connection to the material. It’s important to them not just toss something on a slate, but to really get involved in the development process. Lowden is particularly passionate about bringing more work to his native Scotland and Ronan’s native Ireland, while Ronan is keen to learn from her friend Gerwig and try her hand at directing one day. “I’ve been an actor for about 20 years and although I’ve enjoyed it – which I still really do – my relationship with it has changed over time,” she says. “I’ve gained so much experience through the hundreds of amazing people I’ve worked with that I just want to take on some more responsibility.”
