The thing is, if you ask any single person what the ideal way to meet someone is, most will say in real life, not online. We’re all so tired of the fickleness of dating apps that it’s become boring to make fun of them, so I won’t do that here. What I will say is that, personally, I’d rather be set up by a friend than go on another disappointing date with a guy from Hinge who’s probably a little boring at best, and maybe a little pathetic at worst. I’m joking—but I mean, things are so bad on the dating app scene that a friend of a friend whose photo I haven’t even seen is a much more appealing option than a complete stranger I have no connection to. And yes, I still think that way even after that disastrous arranged wedding.
“I had a guy fall asleep on our date,” says Annabelle, 32, who is often set up by friends, and has even been set up by her mother twice. “Another wondered what I would look like if I wasn’t well. A gentleman told me I should be grateful to be with him because he usually only dates ‘10/10 chicks.’ And the women I was set up with spent the entire date questioning my weirdness.” If you simply don’t like someone your friend (or mother) set you up with, that’s one thing. A polite “no, thank you” is usually enough to get you through. But if they start verbally abusing you and a few others as part of a drunken argument, that’s another. There’s a part of you that feels embarrassed for them, like I did. Then comes the insulting part: Why would anyone think I could get along with this total baboon? By the way, I asked my friend this and she confessed that she hadn't seen Bobby in years. A note to all setters: make sure your research is up to date.
