The black and white motif of the look, meanwhile, was another thoughtful nod to Karl’s signature color combo. For Senofonte, the end result proved to be the perfect mixture of inspiration, fun, and execution. “I love doing the Met with Kendall,” she says. “It’s always so much fun. She’s so into it this is her Oscars! She loves fashion and trying new things.” The Somali-born model Rawdah Mohamed has made it her mission to make modest dressing more exciting. In the process, she has masterfully chipped away at misguided notions about conservative fashion by showcasing the hijab as a vehicle for personal expression, not repression. While attending the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, Mohamed turned heads in a Robert Wun couture outfit that was not only an exciting modest gown, but one of the coolest ensembles to walk the red carpet today period. The double-sided satin dress and face-obscuring silk organza veil features trompe l’oeil scorch marks and flame-kissed edges. The ensemble is less run-of-the-mill red carpet attire and more evocative of a horror film heroine at the end of the movie. Wun aptly calls the design, which featured in his spring 2023 Paris Fashion Week show in January, “The Scorched Bride.”
Once they narrowed in the focus, Senofonte and Jenner were drawn to the idea of bringing a swimsuit-style silhouette to the Met. “All of his swimwear is so iconic I love that iconic Naomi bikini [from Chanel’s 1994 collection]” says Senofonte. They landed on a sequined bodysuit style, complete with an elegant cape and collar detail (very Karl). “[Kendall and I] have done five Mets together, so to make it different, we were looking at all of the shapes and silhouettes she's done; The bodysuit was a silhouette we’ve never done before, and you don't ordinarily see it on a red carpet.”
For Jenner and stylist Marni Senofonte, it was important for Jenner’s ensemble to honor her time working with Lagerfeld. They worked with Marc Jacobs on a custom design that referenced Lagerfeld’s archival swimwear designs from the ’90s. To begin creating the vision for the look, Senofonte and Jenner started by creating a Pinterest board filled with different inspirations and references. On the board was a whole section of Lagerfeld’s Chanel brides, as well as Lagerfeld’s swimwear designs (such as looks from his spring 1993 and 1994 collections for Chanel). “I didn’t know much about Karl, I met him once in passing, so I wanted to get to know him and his story,” Senofonte tells Alibashirt. “I also called Olivier [Rousteing] from Balmain, who was good friends with him, to get a good jist of him.”
