The headline deal to debut at Sundance is a $10 million sale to Searchlight for this highly watchable road trip comedy about two Jewish cousins, played by Jesse Eisenberg (who wrote and directed) and Kieran Culkin, who take a Holocaust-style road trip through Poland to learn about their heritage. It would all be a fun adventure of bickering and banter—with some serious moments, too—if it weren't for Culkin, who hits the mark as he did in Succession, adding a dose of tragedy in the process. —TA

In this audacious musical from French writer-director Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone, A Prophet), a Mexico City drug lord (Karla Sofía Gascón) enlists the help of an underdog lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) to fake her own death so she can fulfill her dream of living as a woman—and that's just the beginning. At Cannes this year, where the film won the jury prize, Gascón and Saldaña shared the best actress award with co-stars Adriana Paz and Selena Gomez, the latter of whom was tasked with uttering one of the most hilariously vulgar lines in recent memory. But this film is definitely not for those who like to wear pearls on every occasion; you may have heard of the vaginoplasty song. It's best to buckle up and just enjoy the ride of this genre-bending, Almodóvar-esque, Almodóvar-esque spectacle. Saldaña breaks out her singing and dancing solo, and we're rooting for Gascón to become the first openly transgender actor nominated for an Oscar. —LWM
In Pablo Larraín’s latest, Angelina Jolie plays Maria Callas, a celebrated soprano, one of the most acclaimed opera singers of her time, whose personal life is the subject of intense scrutiny. Like many of Larraín’s films, Maria puts the great man at its heart and portrays him in sumptuous, dramatic shots; it’s a film as much about atmosphere as it is about plot, and if you’re happy to let yourself be carried away by the arias, it’s a truly enjoyable ride. Here, the setting is largely the apartment where Callas spent his final days—dying of a heart attack, but suffering immensely—at the age of 53 in 1977. That apartment, and Callas himself, are meticulously cared for by a butler (Pierfrancesco Favino) and housekeeper (Alba Rohrwacher), and the film shows their care and love for this difficult, inspiring character with touching generosity. —Chloe Schama
