When it comes to impossible nail art, Mei Kawajiri has become an industry favorite. It's no surprise that she doesn't hold back when it comes to creating a gory look. "Last year, I created this super creepy and realistic wounded nail look!" Kawajiri tells Vogue. "I used nail polish and a small brush to create the blood and scared people online." If the torn nail is a little too close to home, she shares alternative designs that are still appropriate. "I recommend using black and red for nail art, like a French tip, if you want something that can be worn after Halloween." In her experience, super long and square shapes tend to be the most popular. As for Kawajiri's nail polish of choice? Gucci Vernis á Ongles in Black Crystal, a deep onyx shade that will draw you in.
“Black heels are definitely a big hit for Halloween, but with squares becoming so popular, I have more clients wanting square nails,” says Cazares. She recommends having a good nail care regimen and planning ahead to ensure your nails last. “My first tip is to always moisturize with your favorite cuticle oil. This will keep your nails looking fresh even as they grow out. I also recommend choosing a color and style that you won’t get tired of after the holiday. Finally, if you don’t want to look too spooky, I recommend a solid color like black heels, as heels make your nails look like witches, but black goes with everything and will look great after the holiday.”
Trends may come and go, but there's always room for a black cat (or two) when it comes to Halloween nails. "It changes every year depending on what's the most popular costume or character that year, but there are still main themes every year," says artist and founder of Emilie Heathe, Emily Rudman. "Black cats, ghosts, pumpkins, and spider webs are always pretty popular. I'm expecting snakes to take center stage this season." In previous seasons, Rudman has seen stiletto and round nail shapes take the lead, but this year is a little different. "Coffins and ballerinas are definitely the most popular looks this season."
