Minutes into the first episode, things took a darkly familiar turn when, in what he believed to be a private moment, Vincent Ledu spewed racist slurs in a tirade against Perel Foster that quickly went viral. In the days and episodes that followed, he rebuffed calls for Ledu’s resignation, even staging a retrospective fashion collection. Meanwhile, Paloma Castel responded by staging a fashion show under her own label, Doppel, using recycled scraps from Ledu’s discarded merchandise, and Perle Foster went from muse to dealer and made moves to replace Vincent with Paloma.
Who is responsible for all this fashion drama? Carine Sarfati, costume designer for La Maison, whose lofty task is not only to design outfits for all these industry insiders, but also to produce fashion collections for them. Not only is Sarfati’s work considered plausible, but I also think her creations for the fictional La Maison labels are so believable that they wouldn’t look out of place on the Vogue runway. Her characters lurk and act in a variety of outfits from Alaïa, vintage Jean Paul Gaultier, vintage Claude Montana, Chloé and Lemaire, while fabrics for various fictional fashion collections are sourced from Sophie Halette, Solstiss and Hurel.
Carine Sarfati: There are many references to Vincent’s style, but in the end, they all come together in a similar minimalist style. The inspirations come from Steve Jobs, Giorgio Armani, Norman Foster, Haider Ackerman… For Vincent, the idea was to find a uniform for him. With these inspirations in mind, we decided to give him a black, minimalist outfit that would be the link between all his styles. Fashion designers often have this uniform: a strong visual identity that becomes a signature. Their creations must be the center of attention.
