Together, these women represent a new wave of trendsetters and leaders in New Orleans—rooted in tradition but unafraid to innovate. Their work tells the story of their lives, their communities, and their deep connection to a city that, despite its challenges, continues to inspire dreamers, artists, chefs, and creators. Whether you crave classic Cajun dishes, innovative pastries, or a blend of international and local flavors, these are must-visit recommendations for women-owned or operated establishments.
Wild Terrains has tapped Made in New Orleans (MiNO) Foundation executive director Lauren A.K. Darnell to lead the tour. “We’re celebrating women who are not only excelling in their fields, but are actively shaping the cultural landscape of New Orleans,” Darnell said. “They are trailblazers in food, art, and design—frontrunners who embody the spirit of this city.” The new role is a perfect fit for Darnell, who is a leader in advancing equity in the hospitality industry and providing career development, mentorship, and resources to BIPOC professionals in New Orleans through her consulting business, Porch & Okra, and her role at MiNO. “In the hospitality industry, which preserves so much of our culture, the people who work behind the scenes are often the most marginalized. Darnell said it is my personal mission to change that. “My family history, from weathering storms to my mother becoming the first Black Crayfish Queen and my father’s work as a public defender, has taught me the importance of justice and helping others.”
A small group travel company for women specializing in itineraries that offer transformative experiences that support female entrepreneurs, Wild Terrains has just launched its first domestic trip, a four-day/three-night girls’ trip to NOLA. “It was important to me to design an experience that not only celebrated the rich culture of Louisiana, but also connected travelers to the women who are the backbone of this complex and vibrant city, and what better way to do that than through food,” says Wild Terrains founder Lauren Bates, whose family hails from Louisiana. The itinerary is packed with exclusive experiences, such as an evening cruise through the waterways of Louisiana’s fragile coast on a small fishing boat headed to a swamp dinner. If getting a reservation at the Mosquito Supper Club is difficult, imagine sitting down to a soulful private dinner prepared by Melissa and inspired by her mother’s recipes; shrimp and okra gumbo, crispy soft-shell crab and raspberry dumplings. The evening embodied what it means to share a meal in South Louisiana: talk about life on the swamp, the fragile ecosystem, rich Cajun cuisine and the close-knit communities that thrive here.
