They’re a super-light, for one, and they can be paired with virtually any kind of top including a white classic tee for day, or a strappier going-out option for night. With summer just around the corner, we’ve already seen a hint at which skirts the stars are wearing. Cue the mini versus maxi skirts debate. Celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, and Hailey Bieber have been stepping out in skirts that range from itty-bitty to extra-long. Which team are you on? There’s benefits to both hemlines. If you’re a maxi skirt fan, you’ll know that the long, breezy style is the perfect way to add a free-spirited, slightly bohemian feel to any look. Earlier this month, Katie Holmes styled a white pleated maxi with a chunky knit. She’s also worn the skirt with dad sandals. For the Met Gala after-party earlier this month, Rihanna also stepped out in her own version of a maxi skirt: She wore a white Chrome Hearts ensemble including a single-button top and floor-length skirt, complete with a high slit. There’s something instantly effortless and undone about a maxi, even when worn as eveningwear.
Every New York Fashion Week, certain designer items emerge as the fashion crowd’s favorites. Last year, everyone was wearing the Prada logo tank tops and minimal strappy heels by The Row. This past week, however, dainty Manolos were eclipsed by one shoe destined to go viral: MSCHF’s big red boots, aptly named the Big Red Boot. If you’re unfamiliar with MSCHF, they’re the experimental fashion brand that loves using their product releases to make a statement (often controversial ones). They’ve released boots that resemble medical casts, Birkinstock sandals made out of Hermès Birkins, and even Satan sneakers in collaboration with Lil Nas X that featured a drop of real blood in the soles. The label loves to push the boundaries of fashion and, more importantly, to make headlines. Their latest release which looks like something Mario from Super Mario would wear comes out today. They retail for $350, are made of TPU rubber and an EVA mid-outsole, and take design cues from a video game. “Cartoonishness is an abstraction that frees us from the constraints of reality,” the press release for the boots read. “If you kick someone in these boots, they go boing!”
By Vivienne’s side now and for more than 30 years of their colorful shared lives stands her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, the dashing, tender artistic director of their fashion label. We discuss the Amazonian-wild-rubber dress they’ve designed for me to wear to the Met Gala tonight and Chico Mendes, the wild-rubber-tapping activist who lost his life fighting to protect the rainforest. Vivienne listens intently, as always, then shares her observations, gesticulating palms out for emphasis.
