To accompany hairstylist Guido Palau’s ouroboros braids duets of plaits seamlessly connected behind the head, a visual pulled from Rivera’s Calla Lily Vendor Philips embraced subtlety. Think: a blend of Diorshow On Stage Crayon and Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara (now featuring refillable packaging) at lash roots, but not lengths; tiny touches of powder to combat the humidity; and Dior Rosy Glow in Rosewood (with a lip to match) for a wash of warmth.
“Her aesthetic is very natural and fresh, but for Cannes we wanted to be a little bit more dramatic and fun,” says Barose. “I wanted to make the lips look soft with a pop of color, kind of like the way the color would look on a flower petal it’s bright, but still translucent and sheer.” Barose eschewed sticks and glosses in favor of Eisenberg Paris’s Fusion Balm in Nacarat, the subtle coral tint a perfect (and perfectly unplanned) pairing to Gladstone’s earrings from Native American designer Jamie Okuma.
An aesthetic based on a high-octane dose of color, style, and pretty playfulness is one destined to carry an influential, highly contagious air. Barbie-core seems to have permeated the whole of the fashion world (or at the very least, resort season), most recently evidenced by the cadre of Priscilla Presley lengths and pop star ponytails that punctuated the baby pink and blue ensembles on the Versace runway. The show took place today in Cannes, cheekily towel-wrapped hair and metallic manicures teaming with polka dots and butterfly motifs in an aura of spirited glamour. But it was the mane volume a combed-back bouffant that towered and flipped, along with ample updos of similar reach that took the show to fantastical new heights, the sort of beauty imagined with exaggerated luxury in mind. Hair was set off by makeup looks from artist Pat McGrath, pouts painted in pinks, nudes, and brickish burgundies finished with a touch of luminous highlight, while cat-eye liner was furthered by copious lashes. In short, it, like the Chanel runway before it, offered an ode to Barbie and her full-on cultural resurgence, courtesy of Greta Gerwig.
