Lily-Rose Depp joined her co-stars from the new HBO series, The Idol, for her red-carpet moment at Cannes Film Festival. On the Croisette, she wore a sequined Chanel minidress adorned with a flower at its centre. It was either a vintage piece worn by supermodel Christy Turlington on Chanel’s fall 1994 runway, or a custom homage to the original. The actor wore the look as it was seen at the show: styled with sheer opera gloves and gossamer-thin tights. However, she didn’t wear the floral headdress worn by Turlington, and instead wore her hair in a low-bun, with loose tendrils that framed her face. The stars are making a habit of recreating major ’90s supermodel moments right now: there were several epic runway throwbacks on the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala.

To kick off his meaningful reintroduction, Tesfaye attended the Cannes premiere of The Idol in noticeably more restrained and dapper attire than the enviable array of red blazers, boxy jackets, and bomber coats we’ve seen him in. On Monday, it was all about the expertly crafted tuxedo and an iced-out wrist with his Piaget watch. Tesfaye and his stylist, Matthew Henson, turned to designer Jonathan Anderson at Loewe for the formal moment. “We wanted to go with something formal with a twist that you might not notice at first glance,” Henson. “We went with a tuxedo that has a tighter placket and smaller lapel inspired by a leather jacket Jonathan did, for a modern take on a tuxedo.” The collaboration resulted in a suit that perfectly aligned with modern trends and approaches to the men’s suiting. Tesfaye’s silhouette was streamlined and fresh, but not overly trendy the hard-to-achieve Goldilocks point.

With plenty of buzz and conversation behind it, The Idol premiered at Cannes Films Festival on Monday. Blackpink member Jennie Kim, who makes her acting debut in the gritty drama, hit the red carpet in an angelic midi dress by Chanel. The white lace midi dress, designed by Virginie Viard, featured a corset silhouette on top and a voluminous lower-half and tulle hem. While not necessarily fitting into standard definitions and perceptions of vintage, Kim did turn to the house’s archives for the graceful number. The dress is from Chanel’s spring 2020 couture show, the first with Viard as creative director following the death of Karl Lagerfeld.
