The Washing, designed by Peter Elias and Jeneile McCarthy, looks like something Wakandan royalty might wear to a mas. Revelers in this section twirled in their azure and teal tie-dyed capes. They wore crowns shaped like elegant masses of seaweed and paraded around Queen’s Park Savannah while a song called “Come Home,” by Nailah Blackman and Skinny Fabulous, reverberated through the streets. When Maharaj and I spoke over Zoom, he wore a highlighter-yellow Lost Tribe hoodie and black shades. He was on his way to distribute attire for a section called Power, designed by veteran costume builder Solange Govia and Richard Dookhdeen. The female ensemble is a three-piece garment that looks like a spectacular flamenco dress; crimson red meets aquamarine, conjuring a warm Caribbean sunset. For the male costumes, Govia and Dookhdeen channeled Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. Both garments feature an asymmetrical beaded wing that looks perfectly brûléed. These masqueraders are the “unlikely warriors” of the Lost Tribe.
In 2021, the Lost Tribe design team had to come up with designs for a 2023 carnival that wasn’t yet a reality. The government had been strict during the coronavirus pandemic and, at times, imposed a curfew from nine in the evening until five in the morning. “At the time when I came up with [the] theme, you know, my designers was feeling very heavy,” Maharaj says. “They were like, ‘Well, we designing for a carnival that we don’t even know if it exists,’ because we had to design before Trinidad government said, ‘Yes, we having a carnival.’” Maharaj sensed that morale was low, but kept carnival Tuesday in mind.
Zendaya gave the paparazzi a quick sneak peek at the new Valentino Pink PP shade before it even hit the runway at the label’s fall 2022 ready-to-wear show.. Paris, fall 2022 ready-to-wear Way back in 2018, these Tokyo street stylers showed their love for Barbie by repping merchandise and the hue. Tokyo, spring 2019 ready-to-wear Fashion is self-expression. It’s one of the reasons why we love to people-watch, and one of the reasons why street style has become one of the defining photographic genres of our time. Few things are as inspiring as seeing the way people dress in their everyday lives (just ask Matthieu Blazy, who continually cites “the streets” as inspiration for his celebrated vision at Bottega Veneta). Which is why we are launching a new street style series that looks at what people are wearing in the coolest neighborhoods in countries around the world. Following the Dior resort show in Mexico City this past weekend, in which Maria Grazia Chiuri referenced Mexico's rich history and collaborated with many local artisans, we thought it was a good time to ask, what does style in Mexico City look like today? We asked the photographer Dorian Ulises López Macias to show us; they took us around different neighborhoods of Mexico City, including La Roma where they live. Here’s what López Macías had to say about the latter.
